Forestry Basics Rate of Return Management Value Calculator

Trees and forests produce many benefits for landowners and society as well. Good stewardship provides an economic benefit to landowners that makes it easier to provide and protect the other benefits that the landowner and society desires.  If you would like to download the Microsoft Excel file used to generate the values given in this Web Site, click the following link,  Log Value Calculator.  Just added to this calculator is a page for estimating Stumpage Value. Stumpage is the most common term used when timber is being sold on the stump and relates specifically to the number of trees per acre. As with the Log Value calculator the major caveat MUST be kept in mind that this is a tool to give the average non-forestry professional landowner and idea of what the value of thier standing timber is. If your trees are of exceptional quality (either high or low) the true value will differ considerably. You will be able to insert your own local or more current log/stumpage values in the appropriate section. The first sheet of this file is the stumpage calculator giving per acre values while the second sheet allows you to calculate individual log values based on the initial DBH inserted in the appropriate cells. All subsequent sheets are look-up tables for the various species with values based on the log values given on the first sheet.  In order to make the most of this tool you will need to do at least a cursory 'Cruise" of your woodlot. You can read "How to Estimate the Value of Timber in Your Woodlot." Any questions about this spreadsheet can be directed to Jeff Slahor.
