osage_SmallA Basic Wood Anatomy and Identification will be held December 1, 2010 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Jacksons Mill, WV

Registration is $5.  Contact Bruce Loyd – Lewis County Extension Agent at 304-269-4660 to register

Instructor: Larry Osborn, WVU Appalachian Hardwood Center

The goal of the workshop is to teach a systematic approach to identifying wood using simple tools and techniques (utility knife & 10X hand lens), suitable for application to WV native species and other domestic and imported species commonly encountered. Wood identification is a visual exercise, so emphasis is placed on visual feature and pattern recognition using actual wood specimens.

Discussion topics will include: basic wood types, structure, and important anatomical features; basic specimen preparation and examination using hand lens; important properties of selected wood species, and how those properties relate to specialized uses and objects; and the limitations of wood identification.

The course will include discussion and hands-on exercises, including the use of identification keys and online web-based resources. Participants are encouraged to bring samples of their own for examination and possible identification.
