LoaderThe Appalachian Hardwood Center (AHC) at West Virginia University, is a jointly supported center of the WVU Extension Service and the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences. The center was established in 1987 by the West Virginia Legislature to provide technical and research support for the state's growing wood products industry. The AHC is a center of excellence for outreach; extension and technology transfer; professional development; and applied research. The AHC serves sustainable natural resource-based businesses and communities as well as private forest landowners and natural resource professionals in the Appalachian forest region.

The efforts of the AHC include the following:

  • Establish partnerships between the private and public sectors to improve communication, promote cooperation, and share information.
  • Initiate, either originally or by request, and conduct basic and applied research in the area of sustainable natural resource-based economic and social development and management.
  • Provide technical assistance to sustainable natural resource-based businesses and communities as well as private forest landowners and natural resource professionals located throughout the Appalachian forest region.
  • Promote and expand the efforts of the AHC in the public domain and provide information to administrators in the University system, including the Division of Forestry, Extension, and the College regarding specific needs of the center in an effort to become a true “Center of Excellence”.
