LoaderThe Appalachian Hardwood Center (AHC) at West Virginia University, is a jointly supported center of the WVU Extension Service and the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences. The center was established in 1987 by the West Virginia Legislature to provide technical and research support for the state's growing wood products industry. The AHC is a center of excellence for outreach; extension and technology transfer; professional development; and applied research. The AHC serves sustainable natural resource-based businesses and communities as well as private forest landowners and natural resource professionals in the Appalachian forest region.

 
To Saw or Not to Saw: A fact sheet related to cants

Over the course of a day, sawyers/resaw operators must make numerous decisions about the next cut on a log or cant, thereby directly affecting the profitability of the mill. One decision that may not receive much thought is the question of what cant size to produce. Many mills have markets for a range of cant sizes, but may not realize the monetary impact sawing certain cants has on overall profits. This fact sheet investigates the decisions a sawyer faces when deciding on whether to saw a 4" x 6" versus a 5.5" x 6" cant from a given log.

2007 Wood Byproducts Directory Released!

The new 2007 Wood Byproducts Produced and Needed Directory has been released.

This directory presents information about the production and use of wood byproducts, including sawdust, bark, chips, shavings, slabs, and edgings, in West Virginia and areas of adjoining states where business is conducted in West Virginia during the summer of 2007. Information presented in this report was obtained through a mail survey of 351 primary and secondary wood products manufacturers and 156 potential users of wood byproducts identified by the Appalachian Hardwood Center (AHC).

The Appalachian Hardwood Center (AHC) is seeking hardwood sawmill cooperators in the Appalachian region to participate in the development of a regional log to lumber program.  The purpose of the program is to build a database of sawlogs and lumber yield data that mills can access to analyze their in-house yields, as well as, conduct comparative analyses with other mills.
