To Saw or Not to Saw: A fact sheet related to cants
Thursday, 03 January 2008
Over the course of a day, sawyers/resaw operators must make numerous decisions about the next cut on a log or cant, thereby directly affecting the profitability of the mill. One decision that may not receive much thought is the question of what cant size to produce. Many mills have markets for a range of cant sizes, but may not realize the monetary impact sawing certain cants has on overall profits. This fact sheet investigates the decisions a sawyer faces when deciding on whether to saw a 4" x 6" versus a 5.5" x 6" cant from a given log.
