My career in wood science/wood technology approaches the twenty year mark, starting at the University of Maine, Orono working on remedial treatment of utility poles and ways to improve preservative penetration into the refractory wood of red spruce to my current work at the Appalachian Hardwood Center which involves the current projects:

  • Building and maintaining a website dedicated to providing current information on sanitation of wood packaging material critical to manufacturers supplying this material for international trade, as well as another website geared to introducing the small private land holder to the concept of managing a woodlot from the rate of return perspective.
  • Using non-destructive spectroscopy methods for identifying wood species “in-line” during manufacture of various wood products.
  • Using wood fiber to ameliorate acid mine drainage.
  • Assisting in various mill studies seeking to better correlate log grade with milling output.
